Moving During the Texas Summer

Summer is San Antonio's moving season

School is out, leases turn over, and the military and corporate relocation calendars line up—so summer is when the most people move and when movers are busiest. Book as early as you can, and expect less flexibility on dates than in the fall and winter.

Plan the day around the heat

• Ask about an early start—loading before the hottest hours makes a real difference
• Have plenty of water on hand for the crew and your household
• Run the air conditioning until the last box is loaded, then close up
• Dress for the work: light clothing, sunscreen, closed-toe shoes
• Plan breaks—if you are doing some of the carrying yourself, pace it

Protect heat-sensitive items

The inside of a truck in a San Antonio afternoon is far hotter than the air outside. Items that handle a normal day fine can still be damaged by hours in that heat.

• Candles, vinyl records, and wax items — they warp and melt
• Electronics and batteries — extreme heat shortens their life and lithium batteries should not bake
• Medications and supplements — many lose effectiveness in heat
• Plants — travel with you in the car, watered and shaded
• Aerosols, lighters, and anything pressurized — should not ride in a hot truck at all

Watch for summer storms

Texas afternoons can flip from clear to downpour quickly. If storms are in the forecast, talk to your movers about timing—crews carry protection for furniture and flooring, but staging boxes indoors until loading, and covering walkways, keeps water out of your belongings.

If kids are out of school

Summer moves with children are easier with a plan: arrange childcare or a helper for moving day itself, let kids pack a box of their own favorites, and unpack their room first at the new place so they have a familiar space by bedtime.
