Start with your building's rules

Many San Antonio apartment communities have move requirements: reserved elevators, restricted move hours, certificate of insurance from your mover, or loading dock rules. Get these from your leasing office several weeks ahead, in writing if possible.

Also ask about the move-out process at your current building. Deposits are easier to recover when you know exactly what condition and paperwork the office expects.

Elevators, stairs, and walk-ups

Third-floor walk-ups are a fact of life in San Antonio, and they change the move more than anything else. Extra flights mean more time and sometimes an extra crew member—tell your movers the floor and stair situation when you request your quote.

For elevator buildings, reserve the elevator for your move window and protect the floors and walls as your building requires. A reserved elevator can turn a six-hour move into a four-hour one.

Parking and access

• Find out where a moving truck can legally park and reserve it if your complex requires it
• Measure doorways, hallways, and elevator interiors—large sectionals and mattresses get stuck in older buildings
• Let your leasing office know the move date so they expect the truck
• Note gate codes, parking passes, or guest registration your complex needs

What to tell your movers

Floor number, elevator or stairs, distance from truck to door, building rules, and any oversized items like a sofa bed, piano, or glass table top. None of this is a bother to a good moving company—it is exactly the information that makes your estimate accurate and your move day smooth.

Make the unpack easier

In a smaller space, what you own matters more than how it is packed. Declutter seriously before the move—you pay for every box that goes up the stairs.

Label boxes by room and priority. In an apartment, boxes you need first (bedding, toiletries, kitchen basics) compete for space with everything else, so mark them clearly.
